　　慰安婦像建設問題について、バーナビー市の立場を公表したそうで、それに対して
　　友人から説明が送られてきたので転送させていただきます。

　　みなさま、

　　先日来、気にかけていただいた、例のバーナビ市の慰安婦像設立問題について、
　　知り合いから新しい情報を入手しましたので、転送いたします。

　　このバーナビ市からの正式発表を簡単にまとめますと、
　　韓国側から１年ほど前に立像の交渉がありましたが、市としては、正式には進行も
　　却下もしていません。
　　地元の日本住民から反対の電話や書面も受け取っていて、バーナビ市としては、
　　多民族の文化を尊重し、ひいては世界の平和を願っています。
　　今後、もしこの設立法案が見直されることがあれば、また、その時点で考え直しま　　　す。というなかなか、上手な表明です。
　　当面は、これ以上設立に関しては続行しないといっていますが、韓国側の主張も
　　考慮して、あくまでも全面却下ではないような文章となっています。

　　いろんな方が、中には直接バーナビ市に手紙や電話をかけてくださった方々もいて、
　　そういったことが早期決着に結び付いたのだと思います。
　　日本から応援してくださった方々も、ありがとうございました。

　　とりあえず、バーナビ市については、一応区切りがつきましたが、
　　今後は、他の市、または違う国にアプローチすることもあるかもしれないので、
　　その情報があった時はお知らせくださいね。

　　　　　　　　　　　　Proposed Peace Monument Update

　     During the past year, the City of Burnaby received a proposal from a group of local
        Korean communituy members and  its Korean Sister City of Hwaseong to erect a
        Peace Monument dedicated to the "comfort women" of Second World War. The
        monument was proposed for existing site of the Korean War Memorial and
        Ambassador of Peace Statue in Burnaby's Central Park.

        When the City of Burnaby was in the early stages of reviewing the project, gathering
        information and community input to assess the application, it became clear that the
        proposed project was causing concern for members of the local Japanese-Canadian
        community and  others who wrote and called in to express their views. Contrary to
        speculation in the media and in the public, project approval was never formally
        granted or denied. Rather, the City had just entered the assessment   phase.

        Through the correspondence received by the City of Burnaby and after consulting with
         a broad range of stakeholders, it became evident that the "comfort women" statue
         proposal is an issue that requires discussion in the community. Our city is one that
         wants all citizens and visitors to feel welcome and support projects that build bridge
         and positive relationships between community members. Burnaby is not proceeding
         with the project until such time as a collaborative and unifying solution may be
         achieved.

         Currently, the Japanese-Canadian and Korean-Canadian communities have indicated
         a willingness to come together for dialogue aimed at promoting reconciliation and
         cooperation. The City of Burnaby is supportive of this approach and believes this is
         most reflective of Burnaby's Values as an inclusive and multicultural community
         bringing people from around the world together in peace and harmony.

         Through a community-based, collaborative   process based on mutual respect and
         understanding, it is Burnaby's hope that this potentially divisive issue can be turned
         into an opportunity to engage and demonstrate to other cities positive way forward.
         If a mutually agreed-upon proposal for a monument is put forward in the future,
         Burnaby will consider the application at that time.

         The City of Burnaby would like to thank everyone for their input and correspondence
